Η 16χρονη Liz βιάστηκε από 6 άντρες τόσο άγρια που τώρα βρίσκεται καθηλωμένη σε αναπηρικό καροτσάκι. Αλλά αντί η αστυνομία να απαγγείλει στους δράστες κατηγορίες σε βαθμό κακουργήματος, τους άφησαν ελεύθερους, αφού πρώτα ως τιμωρία τους έβαλαν να κουρέψουν το γκαζόν του αστυνομικού τμήματος! Οργανώσεις γυναικών μας ζητούν να κρούσουμε τον κώδωνα του κινδύνου παγκοσμίως για να βοηθήσουμε να απονεμηθεί δικαιοσύνη. Κανείς ως τώρα δεν έχει βρεθεί ενώπιον της δικαιοσύνης, ούτε οι βιαστές αλλά ούτε και η αστυνομία. Ήρθε όμως η ώρα να δράσουμε. Ας σταθούμε στο πλευρό της Liz τώρα, πριν οι βιαστές και η αστυνομία διαφύγουν. Σύμφωνα με τη μητέρα του κοριτσιού, οι βιαστές επέστρεψαν στο σπίτι της Liz για να χλευάσουν την οικογένεια. Οι δράστες είχαν κάθε λόγο να συμπεριφέρονται λες και ήταν υπεράνω του νόμου. Η αστυνομία όχι μόνο δεν υπερασπίστηκε τη Liz, αλλά την ανάγκασαν μάλιστα να σκουπίσει το αστυνομικό τμήμα, καταχώρισαν το έγκλημα ως πλημμέλημα και στη συνέχεια ζήτησαν απ’τη μητέρα της να την ‘πλύνει’, καταστρέφοντας έτσι σημαντικά ιατροδικαστικά στοιχεία. Μετά από τέσσερις μήνες, η Liz βρίσκεται ακόμα στο νοσοκομείο και δυσκολεύεται ακόμη και να περπατήσει, ενώ μόνο ένας απ΄τους έξι δράστες έχει συλληφθεί και κρατείται μάλιστα με ελαφρές κατηγορίες.
Η ιστορία της Liz είναι ένα ακραίο παράδειγμα ενός συχνού παρόλα αυτά φαινομένου. Στην Κένυα, δύο στα τρία κορίτσια και ένα στα δύο αγόρια έχουν κακοποιηθεί σεξουαλικά. Στις αρχές του χρόνου, μια δικαστική απόφαση-ορόσημο έκρινε ένοχη την αστυνομία γιατί δεν έκαναν σωστά τη δουλειά τους. Το δικαστήριο διέταξε την αστυνομία να υπερασπιστεί την αυστηρή νομοθεσία κατά του βιασμού που ισχύει στην Κένυα. Παντού ο βιασμός θεωρείται έγκλημα απ’το νόμο, αλλά πολύ συχνά οι νόμοι δεν εφαρμόζονται από εκείνους που έχουν την ευθύνη τα προστατεύουν τις κόρες μας.Μπορούμε να το αλλάξουμε αυτό, ξεκινώντας με τη Liz.
Η αστυνομία ισχυρίζεται ότι δεν έχουν τα χρήματα ή την κατάλληλη εκπαίδευση για να υπερασπιστούν το νόμο. Αλλά πόση εκπαίδευση μπορεί να χρειάζονται για να καταλάβουν ότι ο βιασμός δεν μπορεί να τιμωρείται με το κούρεμα του γκαζόν; Αν καταφέρουμε να φέρουμε τους βιαστές της Liz και την αστυνομία ενώπιων της δικαιοσύνης, θα δώσουμε το παράδειγμα στην αστυνομία ώστε να χειρίζεται από εδώ και στο εξής τον βιασμό ως κακούργημα και όχι ως πλημμέλημα. According to the girl’s mother, after they were set free, the rapists returned to Liz’s home to taunt the family. They acted like they were above the law, and they had good reason to think so. Instead of supporting a victim reporting a crime, the police forced Liz to sweep their office, logged her attack as mere "assault", and asked her mother to “clean her up”, destroying key forensic evidence. More than four months later, she's still in hospital and can barely walk. Yet only one of the six men has been held, and only on weak charges.
Liz’s story is an extreme example of a much bigger problem. In Kenya, two thirds of school girls and half of school boys have been sexually abused. And earlier this year, a landmark court ruling found police guilty of failing to do their jobs and ordered them to uphold Kenya’s strict anti-rape laws. Rape is illegal everywhere, but too often these laws are just not enforced by the men charged with protecting our daughters. Beginning with Liz, we can change that.
The police claim that they don’t have the money or training to uphold the law. But you don’t need much training to know that cutting the grass is no punishment for rape. If we can help ensure these rapists and police are held to account, we can set a precedent that will compel police to treat rape as a serious crime, not a misdemeanour.
